Adults of the intermountain potato leafhopper, Empoasca filament (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), are about 3 mm long. Nymphs resemble adults but are much smaller and lack fully developed wings. Adults and nymphs suck plant juices from potato leaves causing the leaves to appear stippled or speckled. Adults and nymphs feed on weeds around field margins before moving into potato fields. Damaging populations do not occur every year in all areas and the migratory behavior of the adults from weedy areas makes it difficult to predict when damaging populations may occur. |
