Winged and Wingless Potato Aphids

The potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Homoptera: Aphididae), is about 3 to 4 mm long. The potato aphid is larger than the green peach aphid and the body is more elongated. This species is less damaging than the green peach aphid because it transmits viruses in a nonpersistent manner. The potato aphid feeds mostly on the upper leaves whereas the green peach aphid feed on the lower leaves. The life cycle of the potato aphid is similar to the green peach aphid, but the potato aphid commonly overwinters on rose rather than Prunus species.
